1 year on, Israel’s relentless attacks in Gaza are compounding a humanitarian catastrophe
On the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks, Israel launched further strikes on northern Gaza, showing no signs of easing the ongoing conflict that has devastated the region.
An Israeli airstrike hit the Jabalya refugee camp, killing at least 10 people, according to hospital officials. Jabalya has faced repeated attacks since the start of Israel’s response to Hamas attacks a year ago. On Sunday, Israel launched a new ground operation near the camp, citing signs of Hamas regrouping in the area.
The Israeli military issued additional evacuation orders on Monday to residents across northern and southern Gaza, intensifying its offensive in both regions.
The United Nations reports that the war has displaced 1.9 million people. Civilians told CNN they feel there is nowhere safe to go.
The conflict has resulted in over 41,000 deaths, including more than a third who are children. Nearly 100,000 people are wounded, and many remain trapped under rubble throughout Gaza, according to the UN.
Hundreds of aid workers have also lost their lives, with more than 220 staff members from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) killed — the highest toll the United Nations has ever seen, said agency chief Philippe Lazzarini.
