Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has directed Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib to summon the chargé d’affaires of the Iranian embassy in Beirut for clarification regarding remarks made by Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, according to a statement from Mikati’s office on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
In an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro on Thursday, Ghalibaf indicated that Tehran is open to negotiating with France on a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon, as well as on the enforcement of a UN resolution that ended the 2006 Lebanon-Hezbollah war, which led to Hezbollah’s withdrawal from parts of southern Lebanon.
Mikati also instructed the foreign minister to communicate Lebanon’s official position on the matter to the Iranian envoy.
Israeli military says it killed 2 “terrorists” attempting to cross from Jordan
The Israeli military reported that it killed two “terrorists” who crossed into Israel from Jordan near the southern Dead Sea area on Friday, marking the first such incident since the October 7, 2023, attacks.
Following the incident, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued searching the area “for another terrorist who apparently fled the scene,” urging the public to follow security forces’ instructions.
Context: This is the first attempted infiltration from Jordan into Israel by armed groups reported by the IDF since the October 7 attacks last year.
